Without giving too much away, most of you will know that it is a musical (lol)
But I have to say, I was really impressed by the actors and actresses doing their own singing and dancing. Catherine Zeta Jones and Renee, who would have known what superb singing voices these women have. And as for Richard Gere, well Oscar for him, he absolutely stole the film. And god can he tap dance
Preferred Moulin Rouge to be honest, but I suspect my enjoyment of Chicago may be influenced by seeing a truly piss poor production of it at the Adelphi.
This film is absolutely awful. I can only presume the musical is too, but probably to a lesser extent. As far as I could make out, every song (if there was more than one, I couldn't really tell after being numbed repeatedly) was in a major key regardless of whether it was supposed to be ballad or happy happy, and oftentimes sounded very much like a cat facing up to a runaway steamroller.
Telling the story by means of the song is an interesting and sometimes effective idea, especially on stage, but only two sectors of the film industry can do it properly: Baz Lurhmann and Disney. The rest need to learn a lot more about audience concentration spans and opportune timing.
Acting was limp and ineffectual, to say nothing of the storyline, which didn't achieve much, emphasised the subversive qualities of dumb women who think the world revolves around their ass, and really it all could have been done a lot better in a Tom and Jerry 5-minute short. Absymal.
