Ooooh, Catherine Wheel. I'm sure I've seen them live somewhere. They supported the Smashing Pumpkins on their last tour didn't they?

(by the way, the version of Flaming June I'm talking about is about 11 minutes long, so try and get that one rather than the radio edit; it's on the album ESCM. Birdland is about 4 minutes, Heal is about 6, and Metheny is 9 minutes long)

punky, think so, aye. Also supported Live on the Secret Samadhi tour, as well as doing a couple of mini-tours - where they r0ck3d. :D

Moneypenny: YGPM

Everyone - The version of Flaming June is remixed by Paul Van Dyke if it makes it any easier searching.

Is that the version Kajun is talking about?

I've found the version that claims to be on ESCM but it's only just over 8 minutes long. The 11 minute one is the Paul Van Dyke remix. Kajun, which one are we meant to be listening to?

Hey, they're both pretty good. :D The PvD mix is more dancey and full of beats; the ESCM original is slightly more laid back but I wouldn't really cite a preference, so whichever you've got.

Pah, got bored - couldn't wait until morning.

I think that, apart from the Catherine Wheel track, Kajun's choices are indicative of his appreciation for music over lyrics - being in that there are no lyrics for three out of four tracks. That's not to think any less of them though.

Heal Catherine Wheel

I love this song. First seen Catherine Wheel supporting Live on the Secret Samhedi tour. TBH, I didn't think much of them at the time - but I was mildly distracted at that concert for other reasons. Kajun however, loved them from the start and I quickly grew to appreciate them too. To the extent that we went to two dates on one of their tours. I love Heal, I think it is a beautiful song - really powerful too. Although not my favourite Catherine Wheel track I think it's a good one to introduce people to them with - and everyone should love them...or else!

Birdland Weather Report

It's amazing how hearing the start of a song can bring back so many memories. I first heard this about 5 years ago at Kajun's house. Thought it was good then, think it is great now. Started developing an appreciation for jazz a few years back. Although Weather Report are indeed a strange band - it's difficult to pick one track that they've done that is indicative of their style. Birdland does remind me of the intro sequence of a cheesy American sitcom more than any of the other tracks I've heard but it's still damn good.

Truth Will Always Be Pat Methany

This is a beautiful piece of music. It is a long track but it never feels too long, and it never feels too rushed - it just does what it has to do. I mean it's about three minutes in before it really starts doing anything and five and a half minutes before it really kicks in but it just works so well. Pat Methany is a fantastic musician and this is an incredible track.

Flaming June BT

I don't really start liking this track until it's about three minutes into it - I think before that it covers every dance cliche that there is. I love the little breakdown bit at around four and a half minutes, although I can't really imagine that in a club. All in all it's not a bad track but I think some of the other BT stuff that I've heard is better.

Flaming June (Paul Van Dyke Remix) BT

TBH, I didn't notice that much difference in the remix until after eight and a half minutes. It's more like an extension to - rather than a remix of - the original track. So for the most part my opinion of it is the same as above. Not too bad, but I've heard better BT tracks.

Catherine Wheel - Heal

This song is so beautiful. Its a total epic. I love it to bits. To be honest I never listen to lyrics and im not making any exceptions for this song. I tend to just listen to the music and the tune of the singing and it manages to make me feel emotional which is very very rare.

Weather Report - Birdland

Well it starts off sounding like Billy Ocean but soon picks up. Not a lot I can say about this other than jazzy. Nice background music I guess.

PVD vs BT - Flaming June

Nothing special but then again I'm not really a fan of this sorta thing. It'll stay in my playlist though because I like it. I wish they made 60 minute long tunes like this, it would be cool.

im tired. thats all i can type.

TBH it didn't do anything for me, but the lyric were OK

BT ~ Flaming June
I liked this one, it just felt right that were no lyrics

Weather Report ~ Birdland
Excuse me for being slow but isn't this a duplicate? We've this song once already and I didn't like it then

Pat Metheny ~ Truth Will Always Be
I liked this one, it just felt right that were no lyrics

The 2 I did like are stay on my play list though, just have to buy legal copies

Not as far as I'm aware. The only other jazz track that has been picked was a Dave Brubeck one that I chose.

OK, my thoughts.

Catherine Wheel ~ Heal

As with Hanohtep, I only discovered Catherine Wheel at a Live gig. I wasn't much of a fan of them until I left the gig and found I still had the songs in my head - the next day I looked up their back catalogue in Virgin and saw numerous albums available. Slowly but surely I got 'em all, and they are truly fantastic. Ferment is their first album, which is incredibly dense and hard, but unfortunately lacks any production quality - in this respect it's difficult to listen to unless you play it loud! I would strongly urge you to download 'Black Metallic' as a friend to 'Heal', since it's an epic journey through noise. For a quieter, more contemplative look through the Catherine Wheel, try 'Fripp' as well. Adam And Eve is possibly their most accessible album, and one of the best - but the Wheel's sound has evolved with every release and so you can be sure that each CD offers a new insight.

BT ~ Flaming June

One of the first tracks (along with Cafe Del Mar) that got me back into dance after a couple of years break from my hardcore days. Flaming June doesn't actually feel at home on the ESCM album, it seems to need to escape to the dancefloor and as such it sounds a little restrained when played at home. It's getting on a bit now and may sound a little Robert Miles'ey - but this isn't indicative of the rest of BT's work (the Movement In Still Life album(s) are pretty eclectic big-beat rockers) and you're only likely to find it played in student clubs surrounded by cheese. Which is a shame.

Weather Report ~ Birdland

My Dad's jazz influence wearing off here - Birdland is a classic fusion track that has hints of all sorts of cultures. The fusion genre is full of exciting mixes of jazz, rock, and electronica, though it's also full of a lot of anal rubbish. Weather Report are one of the stars (Herbie Hancock rode the wave pretty well) of the show and while Birdland is a little more restrained and polished than other tracks, it's a good starting point for exploration. Also try 'Nubian Sundance' for a lot of crazy fun!

Pat Metheny ~ Truth Will Always Be

Again, my dad got me into Pat Metheny when we went to see him live on the Secret Story tour (the album from which this song this song is taken). The sheer number of musicians and instruments on stage was humbling, particularly when the sound that emerged sounded so simple and pure. While much of Metheny's work is laid back and romantic, he manages to escape the Kenny G-ness of a lot of easy jazz, and tracks such as this soaring, beautiful epic reaffirm his ability to use music, and particularly percussion and rhythm, as an emotive tool. A wonderful piece which ranks up there with Blue In Green.
