Which PDA?

Post by Kajun »

PDA is required.

Possibilities in the refurb price range I'm looking at are:

* Treo 600 Smartphone
* Tungsten T2
* Zire 72

A Tungsten T3 or T5 might be possible, but it's pushing the budget a little.

Base requirements are really built into any PDA:

* calendars and tasks organisation - for two distinct roles. I'm not sure how to go about this best; presumably you can install a third party calendar app, and they use different datastores, so one can be for work and one can be for 'other' work

* work on documents (predominantly text)

Nice to haves are:

* use it as a USB drive; T5 is the only one that has a 'real' drive with enough storage, unless you buy a SD card

* use it as a phone - only the Treo has this, but I already have a phone, and I don't really feel that the contact merging is terribly important. The prime advantage here is less kit to cart around, and everything in one.

* WiFi (802); Bluetooth isn't important.

* mp3/camera - unimportant but could be useful; Zire 72 has 1.2mp, which is hardly suitable for anything, except those situations where you always want to take a picture and never have a camera..

Problems:

* Treo doesn't have Documents To Go Pro/Premium, so there's an extra cost.

* Treo doesn't support graffiti, so everything done on the tiny keys, or (mostly likely for all of them anyway), via a wireless keyboard

* no WiFi apart from on Zire 72 and T3. Wifi isn't strictly necessary but would be lovely to have both for work and for home. Con is that it's an added expense, and would take up the SD slot; that ain't so good on the Zire since I'm stuck with 32mb, and isn't great on T3; with the T5 it isn't a problem.

Any thoughts/experiences?

I think I'm ruling out a Treo.. was a nice idea but it isn't PDA-enough. I already have a USB drive, so whether I'd want to use a PDA instead isn't really clear. I would prefer not to fork out another 80 quid for a T3/T5, unless there are distinct advantages over the Zire 72/T2.

I've also just noticed that the E2 supports WiFi with the SD card, which is a point of interest.

Basically, what would you go for out of the three of them: Tungsten E2, Tungsten T2, or Zire 72?

And if none, would you go for the T3/T5?

Running a 72 atm, no real problems here. My version at least doesn't have wifi, only bluetooth. Also, the camera is reasonable (1.2Megapixel is 1280*960, which is still a fairly good size) and works reasonably well indoors sans flash.

Would you benefit from more storage? Would you prefer it to be slightly smaller (i.e. Tungsten slider system)?

How long did it take for the blue paint to peel off? ;)

More storage? Not really, no. The only thing of any size on there is photos; you need an external card to use the MP3 player and frankly my contacts list, calendar and memos are pretty marginal size-wise. The size isn't a huge deal for me, but I've never thought about it. And yes, the blue plastic coating (it's not paint) is peeling off, but it's a rather fetching silver underneath anyway
