No idea. It really pisses me off when it does that. I spent 3 hours trying to sort out words auto-bloody-format in a tender document last week and eventually gave up.
You turned off all the AutoFormat options? In XP, it's Tools > AutoCorrect > AutoFormat > [decheck all] & AutoCorrect > AutoFormat As You Type > [decheck all].
That's my personal approach mate. However when I am(reluctantly) trying to help a neurotic playwrite who throws a wobbly if one of the 4000 files on their desktop is moved slightly, or when I am unable to recreate their heavily personalised toolbars precisely as they were after they have screwed them up. Introducing a new program is out of the question.

I tried unchecking all the ones that sounded vaguely relevant, but was reluctant to uncheck them all. Worth trying though, ta.
